What is Lion's Mane?

Lion's Mane (Hericium enrinaceus) is a species of mushroom found in old-growth deciduous forests, growing primarily on the trunks of old oaks and beeches. Lion's Mane produces fruiting bodies with a distinctive, fluffy appearance resembling a lion's mane. This is where its common name comes from – Lion's Mane.

Asia is the natural region where this mushroom occurs and is cultivated, and where it is deeply rooted in culture and tradition. Thanks to its properties, Lion's Mane has been known and valued in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and widely used by local herbalists.

Lion's Mane, like other mushrooms, is rich in polysaccharides, among which the most numerous group are  beta-glucans.

Beta-glucans and polysaccharides

Polysaccharides are a broad group of chemical compounds composed of long, chain-like molecules composed of repeating sugar units. Due to their structure, polysaccharides can be considered biopolymers, occurring naturally in plants and animals. Polysaccharides include starch, cellulose, glycogen, and chitin. Individual polysaccharides exhibit distinct properties and thus perform different functions, depending on the way the monomeric sugar units are linked together and their type.

Another subgroup of polysaccharides characteristic of mushrooms are beta-glucans, which, like cellulose, are a component of dietary fiber, but unlike cellulose, constitute its soluble fraction. Beta-glucans are a component of fungal cell walls, constituting one of the main structural elements of their fruiting bodies. Chemically, they are compounds composed of D-glucose molecules linked by beta-glycosidic bonds. Beta-glucans differ in chemical structure depending on their origin; virtually every mushroom species has its own unique beta-glucan variety.

What makes our organic extract stand out? / Double standardization

When choosing extract-based dietary supplements, it's worth checking the standardization of the extract. Although many products are based on highly standardized extracts, these standards typically refer only to the total polysaccharide content. Information on beta-glucan content, however, is lacking, even though beta-glucans are the most important polysaccharide fraction. Therefore, information on the total polysaccharide content alone does not necessarily indicate the high quality of the extract, even if it is 40%, 50%, or more. These may be alpha-glucans (which include starch, for example), or the polysaccharide content may be artificially high due to the presence of maltodextrin, which is sometimes added as a stabilizing carrier.

BeOrganic, Lion's Mane BIO 500  mg is based on a high-quality, double-standardized extract from the fruiting bodies of the Hericium erinaceus mushrooms, which guarantees the content of active ingredients at least at the level of 30% of all naturally occurring polysaccharides and 20% of beta-glucans.
