What is Reishi?

Reishi, also known as Ganoderma lucidum, is a species of mushroom that grows on decaying logs. Its distinctive feature is a fan-shaped cap with a shiny, yellowish surface. Although it grows in various corners of the world, the tradition of venerating and consuming it for medicinal purposes is an integral part of Asian culture, where it has been known as Reishi for thousands of years. Reishi mushrooms hold a special place in traditional Chinese medicine.

The main active ingredients that are credited with amazing properties are considered to be beta-glucans – belonging to a broader group of compounds called polysaccharides – and  triperpenes .

Beta-glucans and polysaccharides:

Polysaccharides are a broad group of chemical compounds composed of long, chain-like molecules composed of repeating sugar units. Due to their structure, polysaccharides can be considered biopolymers, occurring naturally in plants and animals. Polysaccharides include starch, cellulose, glycogen, and chitin. Individual polysaccharides exhibit distinct properties and thus perform different functions, depending on the way the monomeric sugar units are linked together and their type.

Another subgroup of polysaccharides characteristic of mushrooms are beta-glucans, which, like cellulose, are a component of dietary fiber, but unlike cellulose, constitute its soluble fraction. Beta-glucans are a component of fungal cell walls, constituting one of the main structural elements of their fruiting bodies. Chemically, they are compounds composed of D-glucose molecules linked by beta-glycosidic bonds. Beta-glucans differ in chemical structure depending on their origin; virtually every mushroom species has its own unique beta-glucan variety.

When purchasing Reishi dietary supplements, it's important to pay particular attention to the extract's standardization, meaning its potency is determined based on the component it's based on. Although many products are based on highly standardized extracts, these often refer only to the total polysaccharide content. Information on beta-glucan content, however, is lacking, even though it is these, along with triterpenes, that constitute the essence of Reishi, giving it its unique, health-promoting properties. The total polysaccharide content alone doesn't necessarily indicate the high quality of a Reishi extract, even if it's 40%, 50%, or more. These may be alpha-glucans (which include starch, for example), or the polysaccharide content may be artificially inflated due to the presence of maltodextrin, which is sometimes added as a stabilizing carrier. Therefore, a complete picture of the quality of a Reishi extract can be gained by additionally knowing the beta-glucan and triterpene content.
