Properties of creatine

Creatine is a substance naturally occurring in the body, especially in muscles, the heart, and the brain. It is produced in the liver, kidneys, and pancreas in a multi-step process from three amino acids: glycine, arginine, and methionine. Over 90% of the body's creatine is stored in muscles, especially the heart muscle.

Inside cells, a phosphate group is added to creatine by the enzyme creatine kinase, creating phosphocreatine. Phosphocreatine can then transfer its phosphate group to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to regenerate the cell's energy currency, adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This process plays an important role in muscles and is especially important when a large amount of energy is suddenly needed.

Creatine may therefore increase physical performance during rapid strength training in the context of short-term, intense physical activity. This effect is achieved with a daily intake of 3 g of creatine.

Meat and fish are the main sources of creatine in the diet. Fruits and vegetables contain only trace amounts. However, large amounts of creatine are lost during the cooking process.
